Case 1. The dog with recurrent right nasal discharge
The dog jogged with his master who is a military person. Over the years, rain or shine. But then he developed a runny nose on his right side. Vet 1 was consulted and an X-ray was taken. The owner came to me for a second opinion. He did not want surgery to open up the back of the nose. Medication worked when given. He consented to irrigation of the nose with anti-fungal solution.  This report described how I did it.

Sep 16, 2009

"No gas mask anaesthesia," I stopped my assistant from using the mask. "The dog may breathe in foreign bodies lodged in his right nose and get inhalation pneumonia and then dies."

Zoletil 50 at 0.25ml was given IV. The dog was recumbent. Saliva flowed out, as this was Zoletil's side effect. Not profuse salivation compared to IM injection. I gave atropine 0.5 ml IM. Salivation soon stopped.

Faint blood-tinged right nasal discharge. Not like some 2 weeks ago. Profuse red blood from right nose. Had medication and one nasal flushing via catheter.

5ml of oral antifungal solution were flushed into the back of the right nose where the foreign bodies were suspected to be located as seen in the X-ray. The dog sneezed our violently. On 2x1 cm piece of cartilage - snow white smooth surface encrusted by soft yellowish brown tissue presumed pus. Another 4 small pieces of pus were sneezed out. Little blood sneezed.

These could be fungal infected nasal tissues. The dog was warded for observation and sent home 3 days later when there was no discharge.

UPDATE AS AT FEB 16, 2012
The Miniature Schnauzer did not fully recover as his right nose still gave discharge but in lesser amounts and frequency. The dog had 3 nasal irrigations under anaesthesia. Based on the dog's active jogging lifestyle and his younger age, I suspected nasal foreign body rather than nasal tumours as contrasted to Case 2 below.

Case 2. The dog with persistent bilateral nasal discharge
In Feb 2012, I saw another case of persistent nasal discharge at Toa Payoh Vets in a 12-year-old Sheltie.

The case is still being treated by Dr Daniel Sing. I hope the X-rays would be useful for vet students studying hard inside her or his small room eating instant noodles and memorising veterinary anatomy of the nose for the examinations.
